The 3rd Forum of the EU strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region commences in Sicily

On 24-25 May 2018 in Catania, Italy, the 3rd Forum of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) began. The Forum is organised by the Italian Republic in close cooperation with the European Commission to present progress of the EUSAIR macro-regional Strategy and promote the strengthening of the network and partnerships within the Adriatic and Ionian Region.

One of the sessions addressed the topic of “Energy Networks for Development and Market Integration”. The discussion highlighted the need for well-interconnected and well-functioning energy markets as necessary preconditions for improving competitiveness, supply security and environmental sustainability. This important session was chaired by the Serbian State Secretary of Mines and Energy Mirjana Filipović.

Energy Charter Secretary-General Dr Urban Rusnák was invited by the Italian Presidency to deliver a keynote address during this session. Dr Rusnák highlighted the importance of not only regional intra-EU connectivity but also the need for cooperation on broader Eurasia projects that include Central Asia and the EU Neighborhood countries (see full speech).

Next year in 2019, the Chairmanship of the Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) will be Montenegro. 2019 will be an important year for the region in regards to energy cooperation, as Albania will assume the Chairmanship of Energy Charter Conference throughout the year. The Montenegro Chairmanship of EUSAIR and the Albania Chairmanship of the Energy Charter Conference will provide a unique opportunity for stakeholders to focus attention on cooperation and energy inter-connectivity in the region.
