The discussion explored the complementarity of investment dispute settlement mechanism provisions of the Energy Charter Treaty and the ongoing discussion between the European Union and the United States concerning the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The role of trade and of the Energy Charter in ensuring energy security in Europe in the light of the Ukrainian crisis were also discussed. Mr. De Gucht appreciated the proposal to establish an early warning mechanism for Russia-Ukraine-EU gas flows under the Charter. Another area of discussion was the ongoing modernisation of the Energy Charter. The parties agreed to continue their cooperation and exchange of information.
