Morocco’s accession process to the ECT

Energy Charter Secretary-General Dr Urban Rusnák and Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development, HE Aziz Rabbah, held a meeting on 30 May 2018 in Rabat. Morocco is willing to continue the accession process to the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) as part of its strategy to mobilise investment in order to achieve the targets of 52% share of renewable electricity generating capacity and 15% of energy efficiency by 2030.

Another envisaged avenues of collaboration are Morocco’s participation in the flagship publication Energy Investment Risk Assessment (EIRA) and hosting in 2019 the third edition of the Rabat International Energy Charter Forum. In a working session with all relevant authorities, agencies and stakeholders, Dr Urban Rusnák and Dr Ernesto Bonafé, Head of Expansion, addressed numerous ECT-related issues regarding investment opportunities in the energy sector, industrial development, investment protection, cross-border trade, dispute settlement mechanisms and respect of national sovereignty.

On 31 May 2018, Secretary-General Urban Rusnák met with the Ambassador of The Netherlands in Rabat, HE Désirée Bonis. The Ambassador expressed the support of The Netherlands to the International Energy Charter and its commitment to play its role as Energy Charter Liaison Embassy (ECLE).
