Energy Charter Treaty addressed at the 9th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

On 12 November 2018, Energy Charter Secretary-General Dr Urban Rusnák took part in the Ministerial Conference and the 9th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development. According to the UN, the world is not on track to achieve its sustainable development and climate change goals. During his intervention, the Secretary-General stressed the potential role of the Energy Charter Treaty to support energy transition.  "We cannot achieve sustainable energy future if fossil fuels still expected to cover 2/3 of the global energy demand by 2040. We need to start to think about a long-term plan to phase out fossil fuels, taking into account the legitimate interests of investors and governments" highlighted Dr Rusnák.

The Ninth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development is being held in Kyiv on 12-15 November 2018. The Forum is co-organized by the Government of Ukraine and the five United Nations Regional Commissions in partnership with IFIs and international organisations, including the  International Energy Charter. The Forum combines ministerial and plenary sessions and provides a unique opportunity for policymakers and experts to reflect on the implications of the fast-paced energy transition.
